Sealants can be categorized into various types by base material, curing method and application. Each type boasts distinct properties and targeted applicable scenarios. Below are common sealant types widely used in household, construction and industrial fields.
1. Silicone Sealant
Made from silicone resin blended with curing agents and fillers, it is one of the most widely used sealants. It features outstanding temperature resistance ranging from -50℃ to 200℃, superior UV resistance, ageing resistance and flexibility, with strong adhesion to glass, metal and ceramics.
Applications: Sealing of architectural doors and windows, glass curtain walls, sunrooms, household appliances and automotive glass. Neutral silicone sealant is non-corrosive for marble and aluminum profiles; acidic silicone sealant has higher bonding strength yet corrosive, only suitable for glass and ceramics.
2. Polyurethane Sealant
Based on polyurethane resin, it cures into elastic solid with great adhesion, wear resistance and tear resistance. It tolerates substantial substrate deformation and offers fine oil and solvent resistance. It adheres well to concrete, wood and plastic.
Applications: Joint filling for curtain walls, concrete expansion joints, road crack repair, automotive body sealing and mechanical equipment sealing, ideal for occasions demanding high bonding strength and elasticity.
3. Polysulfide Sealant
Derived from polysulfide rubber, it excels in water resistance, oil resistance, corrosion resistance and airtightness with reliable ageing resistance, fit for long-term humid and oily environments. It is less flexible than silicone sealant and requires special curing agent during application.
Applications: Water conservancy projects, sewage treatment facilities, chemical equipment and ship sealing, perfectly suited for underwater and damp working conditions.
4. Acrylic Sealant
Classified into solvent-based and water-emulsion types. It is easy to apply, fast-curing and cost-effective with decent adhesion, designed for indoor ambient temperature use. It has poor temperature and ageing resistance, not applicable outdoors or under extreme conditions.
Applications: Indoor gap filling, inner window sealing, furniture and electronic equipment sealing for low weather-resistance requirements.
5. Butyl Sealant
Produced from butyl rubber, it delivers excellent airtightness, watertightness and ageing resistance with eco-friendly composition. It remains permanently soft instead of fully cured, adapting to repeated substrate deformation for lasting sealing performance.
Applications: Insulated glass primary sealing, tire sealing, pipeline joint sealing and roof waterproofing, perfect for scenarios with strict airtightness standards.
